About the Biotech Lab
The laboratory of Biotechnology (Biotech lab) is a research unit of the Department of Biological Applications and Technologies of the University of Ioannina.
More than 100 under-graduate, 18 M.Sc., 18 PhD students and 5 Postdoctoral researchers have been employed in the laboratory of Biotechnology.
The research group of the Laboratory of Biotechnology is headed by Professor Haralambos (Haris) Stamatis and is additionally administered by Assistant Professor Petros Katapodis and Laboratory Teaching Staff member Dr. Angeliki Polydera. The research group has an extensive research activity and experience in the field of Enzyme and Microbial Technology, Biocatalysis and Nanobiotechnology.
Members of the group were participated in 40 European and Greek funded research projects and have more than 190 publications in International peer-review Journals and books. The Biotech Lab maintains a fruitful collaboration with numerous Greek and European Laboratories and participates in the Nano Biology and Medicine Collaborative Research Group of the University of Ioannina.
The main research activities of the members of the Biotech lab
- Development of “green” bioprocesses in conventional and non-conventional media for the production of high-value products (antioxidants, nutraceuticals, compounds with antiplatelet, anticancer, anti-angiogenic anti-microbial and anti-aging activity) and for the biodegradation of pollutants
- Development of bio-nanoassemblies and bio-nanodevices, utilizing enzyme immobilization technology, 3D printing and microfluidic technology, and their application in multienzymatic processes, drug delivery and biosensing
- Development of green processes for the production of functionalized nanostructures and nanomaterials
- Production, cloning, overexpression, purification and characterization of enzymes, Improvement of enzymes properties immobilization technology and medium engineering approaches
- Production of high-value products and biofuels by microbial cultures and microalgae (Modeling/Optimization/ Scale-up)
- Enzymatic and microbial valorization of industrial and agroindustrial by-products
Laboratory Equipment
Our laboratory holds a state-of-the-art equipment, thus supporting both the efficient training of the under-graduate students of the Department of Biological Applications and Technologies, as well as research activities in the field of enzyme biotechnology
The Laboratory of Biotechnology collaborates with a network of other laboratories at the University of Ioannina, providing access to a comprehensive array of analytical, biochemical, computational, spectroscopic, and microscopic techniques (ICP-AES, NMR, XRF, XRD, FT-IR, Raman, UV-Vis, CD, DTA/TGA/DSC, SEM-EDS, HRTEM, AFM, and others) necessary for its research activities
